EP Department

The main purposes of teaching Electrical Power subject are:

  • To realize the nature of electricity
  • To be able to handle the electricity safely
  • To be able to repair and maintain the electricity appliances
  • To realize the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity
  • To be able to make electrical wiring design and illumination
  • To be able to control and drive the electrical machines in industries

In Government Technical Institutes, the students must learn their subjects for three years to get A.G.T.I(EP) Diploma certificate.

Assessment methods are Lecture and semester examinations (40%) and Practical (60%) to realise practial and project training more. If the students pass the examinations with designated marks, they can join the Technologial Universities and can be BE degree holders.

Subjects

The major subjects of Year I are Basic Electricity, Analog and Digital.

In Basic Electricity subject, Electrical Source types and components of electrical circuit, Series and Parallel connections, Different between power and energy, RLC circuit and Safety are taught. The purpose is to measure systematically and use the basic electrical usage: Voltage, current and power and to use them safely. To design electrical circuit correctly and to calculate unit and expense of domestic house metres correctly are also taught.

In Analog and Digital subject, Analog circuits, signals, Half-Waves, Full-Waves, Digital bits, bytes, Binary, Decimal, Hexadecimal and Logic Gate can be learned.

The major subjects of Year II are Electrical Wiring Design and Installation, Electrical Machine, Electrical Engineering Circuit Analysis ၊ Generation Transmition and Distribution.

In Electrical Wiring Design and Installation subject,  the students can learn practically and theoretically the usage of  Hand-Tools, Electrical Accessories and Insulating Materials, Type and Installation of Wiring System, Home appliances in details.

In Electrical Machine subject, the characteristics of DC Generators, Armature Reactions and Commutation, Parallel Operations are taught to realize the basic knowledge of DC machine. The characteristics of DC Motors, Motor Windings, Speed Control and Efficiency and Losses can also be learned.

The students can know Electrical curcuits that are learned in Year I in details in Electrical Engineering Circuit Analysis. They have to learn various kinds of Circuit Design to know Voltage Polarity and Current Direction. After connecting NI board and Computer, how to calculate the circuits by drawing circuit design is also learned.

In Generation, Transmission and Distribution subject, Energy sources: the main generation of electricity, Generation Stations and Sub-stations can be learned in first semester and Overhead Line Design and Performane of Transmission Lines can be learned in second semester.

The subjects that can be learned in Year III are Safety and Protection, Electrical Machine, Transmission and Distribution, Electrical Estimation, Industrial Motor Control and PLC.

Electrical shocks and their Prevention, Circuit Breakers and Fuses, Protection of Alternators, Transformer, Busbars and Lines, Protection against Overvoltage and Neutral Grounding are taught in details in Safety and Protection subject.

The students have to learn about 3 phase circuits, Transformers and Generators and Motors in Electrical Machines subject.

The aim is to know that 3 phase circuits are more powerful than singal phase circuits and to be able to calculate Transformer losses, Effenciency, all-day Effenciency, Noise and Transformer Ratio. By studying them, the students can know the needs for Transforming Winding and can wind the small transformers by themselves. They can also learn about three Phase Motors in details and can rewind singal phase motors where the coils are scorched.

Supply Systems, Underground Cables and Distribution System can be learned in Transmission and Distribution subject.

By studying Electrical Estimation subject, the students can estimate Materials Requirements and expense for wiring installation in domestic houses and industries in details according to wiring design. They can also know the cost of electrical energy in generation stations.

Motor control can be learned in details in Industrial Motor Control & PLC subject. The students can learn how to control and drive motors by switches or by writing software by using PLC(programmable logic control), HML, Logo 8.

Limit Switchs which can stop at the designated place, Photo Sensors which can stop automatically if they see shadow, Voice Sensors which can stop automatically if they hear sound and Timers can be learned practically in Motor Control. Control metnods such as Induction Motors (singal phase & three phase), Direct On Line.Forward- Reverse, Star-Delta can also be learned.

In second semester, the students can learn how to control motors by writing software or by clicking mouse after drawing designs we want to control by using the application relating with control in computer.
